more about what police say happened. later this morning, thomas barnes of charleston will enter this courtroom for the first time. he is facing a 1st degree murder charge. his attorney tells me he will
plead not guilty. according to court documents, barnes shot his nephew, 40 year old joey strickland in the chest once. they were arguing over the phone about unpaid rent, barnes says strickland owed him. strickland drove to barnes' home
and the argument continued. witnesses say barnes warned strickland he had a gun on him. one witness says strickland cocked his fist, that's when barnes shot him. when police arrived, strickland was found dead in the carport. right now barnes' is being held
in a franklin county jail on a $500,000 bond. after the plea, his attorney tells me they will ask for a lower bond. in ozark, pedro rivera, 40/29 news. if charged and convicted, barnes could face life in prison
and an additional 15 years for being felon with a firearm.
