dental crowns are needed when your tooth istoo badly damaged to be restored with another kind of filling. it strengthens the tooth, protects it and improves the shape, color and over all appearance if done correctly.in this video, we will explain some different types of crowns and give you advice on whichones to go for and which ones to avoid if possible. resin crowns are less expensive, tooth coloredcrowns which can be done quickly but they come at a huge disadvantage. they are madefrom a weak material that is usually used for small fillings. these crowns are proneto fracture so avoid them unless you have no other option.metal crowns are made of palladium alloy,
gold alloy or a base metal alloy. some aremade of metal amalgam which contains mercury. they are very strong and will last the longestbut have major disadvantages. 1st, they look esthetically unpleasing when you open yourmouth to speak or smile. 2nd, some people have allergies to metal. 3rd, mercury amalgamcan be harmful to the human body and is harmful to the environment. it has been outlawed inseveral countries like sweden for example. e-max is a synthetic form of porcelain calledceramic. when you hear people say porcelain they are often referring to this kind of crown.the e-max crown has a lifelike shape and transparent color that provides an exact color match withthe patient’s own natural teeth. it has no metal alloy and thus does not affect theaesthetics around the gum line. the crown
is long lasting, strong, and less prone tofractures when compared to other traditional crown types.porcelain fused to metal is very strong due to the metal base. however, it requires theremoval of 1.5 mm of tooth material to place the porcelain and metal layers. it lacks anesthetic look due to its opaque metal portion. it often becomes dark and the metal partsbegin to show if there is gum recession. this means you will have shiny bits of metal stickingout from the white crown near the gum line and it looks bad. an e-max or a zirconia crowncan be a better option when one is looking for an esthetically pleasing crown.a zirconia crown is long lasting, easy to wear and durable. the translucent look ofzirconia blends well with the natural tooth
color and thus provides the most pleasingappearance. it requires minimal tooth preparation thus preserves most of the original toothsubstance. the zirconia crown is tough, durable but itcan impose friction against the tooth root including neighboring teeth. hence, an e-maxcrown could be favorable in cases that require preservation of the root structure.most dental clinics require multiple visits and 1-2 weeks to create and finish crowns.the oaks dental clinic in seoul, korea can do in as little as 60 minutes since they havetheir own in house lab. crowns like zirconia take a little longer as they need have morepreparation time but the dr. chulmin bae and the oaks have the fastest turn around fordental restorations in the country. as you
